This portrait, one of approximately 24 I took during the session, manages to be formal – the light and the completely black background suggest a studio set up reminiscent of the work of the nineteenth century pioneering photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron and the stylized portrait photography of Robert Mapplethorpe, while at the same time it is coded with informality as the subject wears a creased white vest and his hair is rumpled.
